The Joy of Beginning

Beginners Contact Improvisation Intensive

This intensive offers space for discovering our beginning in Contact Improvisation – and deepening the roots, we may have already. It is about relaxing our minds and planting seeds for our body knowledge to grow, unfold and blossom. We will experience and understand softness within ourselves. We will celebrate the floor, meeting it, surrendering into it, receiving its support, growing roots, exploring how to move with ease in a soft exchange.

We will go deep, sensing the layers under the skin, beginning to understand touch and communication in CI. As we discover how to move together sharing one common center of gravity we will enter the fascination of play.

In our dance we will research the moment of falling within ourselves as a door to effortlessness and endless inspiration. As we release into gravity we allow gravity to move us.

There will be time to ask your questions.
This intensive can be your ground to dance from, supporting you in your journey through the festival as well as in finding comfort in entering the jam and Open Space itself.

Elske Seidel

Elske Seidel, based in Berlin, is a passionate CI dancer & teacher, deeply committed to CI and its community internationally. She has been teaching dance full time and wholeheartedly for over two decades, CI since 2004.
In her teaching she believes in opening spaces where dance in all its vital magic and play can simply happen.“In her work she has the experience and knowledge to do little - slowly - so the experience of the participants can expand into the space she holds.”
She likes to create CI events that bring the studio focus outside into nature and into the experience. She enjoys gathering community merging life and dance together. She loves to support practice, jamming and research. She has taught CI in Europe, Canada, the U.S., Argentina, Israel, Russia and Japan.
She is the artistic director of the Annual Contact Festival Fuerteventura/ Spain, Contact Saturday Berlin, as well as co-creating the Berlin Weekend Jam, 23h Jam Berlin, North Sea CI Camp/ Germany, Dance Your Questions: CI Research Week for Experienced Contact Dancers, CI Training Program Hamburg/ Germany and CI Workshop Series BASICS in Berlin & Hamburg/ Germany.

Expressing embodied poetry to space

Language from feet and floor

What if we consider our body a vehicle of language. From which we can talk to space, articulate, formulate, create shapes. From which we can communicate with the other. I would like to explore how we can be shaped by earth, grow from our ground. How we can let our anatomic system articulate and move into languagelike poetic expressions. Moving and talking from Feet and Floor. In these classes we will move through softness and strength, stability and playfulness. We will taste different skills and viewpoints that can work as principles and guidelines as we try to navigate and make choices in different spaces. We will make restrictions into possibilities and we will try to see what we can not see, try to move from stillness and to express what we didn ́t know we needed to say. We will go through techniques and scores. Working in solo, duo and different group constellations. I am inspired to work a lot with feets ́ relating to surfaces, upside-down, with invitations and reading movement, with levers and weight sharing. How can i support the other even though I stay focused on my own individual research? How can I stay engaged in a dance with others and at the same time have awareness of my own choices, directions and inspirations?

Johan Nilsson

I am working with natural sciences, art and gardening. I am a trained gardener/teacher in Biodynamic farming. Its connection to alternative methods and its deep relationship to the natural world are great sources of inspiration to me. I dance CI since 2004. In improvisation I experience the same fascination as when I was a child playing in the forest, in contact with nature, in a world full of imagination and playfulness. My earlier movement history includes sports, capoeira, African dance, world dance and fire spinning. My main inspiration in CI comes from Måns Erlandsson and Malin Anclair, Stockholm. The last few years I have been participating as teacher and performer in several projects, festivals and dance events in Europe. For the past seven years I have beenteaching classes and organizing CI events in Järna and Stockholm. I like to use imagination and the fascination of small details as tools to create my own dance and as inspiration in contact with others. From fire-spinning comes the fascination of continuously travelling weight. In contact improvisation I like to relate to weight shifts and space and I definitely love to take a certain amount of risk.

Contact-tango: balance

Balance in this days is synonymous of calmness, in dance is the interaction from different axes inside our body. The classes will be faced, to recognize our own axis in diferent positions and the construction of to common axis with other dancers. Feeling safe in my axis and in my out of axis. Discovering new points of contact and supports in different types of hugs. Essential aspect of the Contact-Tango.

A balance research in our body will lead us to Balance our movement using less muscle effort and finding the “momentum”. Using the right muscle tone and being relaxed in our dances.

We will introduces specific Tango elements,
Working my out of axis :

COLGADAS (hung): specific Element from Tango that uses The contra- balance concept during the dance.
VOLCADAS (overturn): circular movements using warm and close hug that allows us to have to comfortable contact and gives us to wide possibility of movements.

We investigate the skills of the contemporary partner: like falling down, roller, flying, sharing weight, levels and qualities in the physical contact, the connection between the center of gravity and the periphery. We will play with the rolls in the dances. Playing with the challenge of the change, where the listening and to be present is the conductive axis and where the surrounding space inviting us to the improvisation.

Julian Elizari Romeo

Julian Elizari Romeo was born in 1974 in Bs As, Argentina. He began taking modern dance classes from young age and Took classes wiht traditional Tango dancers in Argentina. At the age of 22, he received his degree from the Institute of National Physical Education in Bs As, Argentina. Learning different Techniques,as Release, Low flow and Contact Improvisation in Bs.As He travel to Europe and Studied at the Lilia Bertelli school of “Danza e movimento”. Florence, Italy. He was then hired as an actor and after as dance teacher by the Isole Compresse Theatre company. He explore always more Contact Improvisation developing his dances with different partner dances technique. Julian has been teaching Traditional and Modern Tango argentino for more then 15 years. Currently he teaches Tango, Contact Improvisation and Contactango in Berlin Germany and in different dance Festivals.

From zero to flying

We’ll start with deeply satisfying contact where pleasure is the first teacher, learn some techniques and traject towards a space that supports freedom of flight and expression. Expression that takes us into interaction and ensemble improvisation. That is: we start at zero to redefine what is contact—to ourselves, others, reality, gravity. We start at zero to connect with our bodies, our interest and spontaneity. We’ll be doing my favorite contact exercises and current curiosities. Created or learned over the decades investigation and indulgence.

Scott Wells

In 1981 Scott Wells discovered the pleasure of contact improvisation shortly after becoming obsessed with the challenges of modern dance. He received his MFA in dance from the University of Illinois and has directed a dance company in San Francisco since 1992. Wells has created works for skateboarders, for boxers and choreographed West Side Story for Sonoma State University. In 2010 and 2005 Scott received the Izzie (San Francisco’s most prestigious dance award) for Outstanding Choreography and was selected by Dance Magazine as “one of the 25 To Watch”. Scott has toured to Europe for the last 19 years teaching and performing in festivals in Moscow, Barcelona, Budapest, Berlin, Vienna, Zagreb to name a few. Locally he has taught at A.C.T, the San Francisco Conservatory for Dance and UC Berkeley. Wells has been practicing Alexander Technique for twenty five years and BMC for fifteen.
